Questions

How do I know whether an income tax notice is genuine?

Log in to the income tax portal and check the pending actions and e-proceedings sections. A notice issued by the department appears there and carries a Document Identification Number (DIN). The portal’s “Authenticate notice/order issued by ITD” facility can also be used.

What happens if I do not reply in time?

The officer may decide the matter on the information available, which can lead to a demand, interest or penalty. Where more time is needed, a request for adjournment can be made online before the due date.

Does every notice mean my return is under scrutiny?

No. Many communications are intimations after processing, or requests to explain a mismatch with the AIS. A scrutiny notice is a separate type of notice.

Can the reply be filed online?

Yes. Replies to most notices are filed through the e-proceedings section of the income tax portal, with supporting documents attached.

Can you say what the outcome will be?

No. The outcome depends on the facts, the records available and the officer’s assessment. The work is to present the facts and records clearly and on time.

General information only, not professional advice. Provisions are to be read with the Income-tax Act, 2025, or the Income-tax Act, 1961 for earlier years, and other laws in force from time to time. Thresholds and dates may change by notification.
