A Director Identification Number (DIN) is a unique number allotted to an individual who is, or intends to be, a director of a company. Designated partners of LLPs use the same number, known as DPIN.
Every individual holding a DIN must complete KYC with the MCA, either through the web-based DIR-3 KYC-WEB if details are unchanged, or through e-form DIR-3 KYC if details have changed. If KYC is not completed by the due date, the DIN is marked deactivated and a fee applies to reactivate it. The MCA has been considering a less frequent KYC cycle, so check the current rule each year.
Key points
- One DIN for life; do not apply twice
- Keep mobile number and email updated with the MCA
- Complete KYC by the due date to avoid deactivation
- A deactivated DIN blocks filings by the companies concerned
- Directors also disclose interests in Form MBP-1 each year
